the picture plane is divided up into foreground, middle ground,
and background. It is common for beginning students to focus on
the foreground and resist working on the middle ground and background.
Plan for all three areas.

Use atmospheric
perspective in landscape.
Things get
greyer and less distinct as they move into the background. Colors
become less high key.
Objects become
smaller as they move to the background.
Generally,
the middle and background is higher up on the picture plane than
