Landscape

Always use your viewfinder to edit out extraneous landscape. This device also helps you see what interests you in the landscape.

Begin by laying out the general areas of the landscape. Generally, the student will want to start with the main horizontal lines of the background.

Remember that the picture plane is divided up into foreground, middle ground, and background. It is common for beginning students to focus on the foreground and resist working on the middle ground and background. Plan for all three areas.

Use atmospheric perspective in landscape.

Things get greyer and less distinct as they move into the background. Colors become less high key.

Objects become smaller as they move to the background.

Generally, the middle and background is higher up on the picture plane than the foreground.

Use verticals and horizontals to create mood. Obvious diagonals create energy and pathways into and around the picture plane. cupsnspoons
